What does the word "seg" mean exactly? It could be short for "segment," but what does it refer to in this context?

I have been out of the United States for 4 years, living in another country. I rarely watched TV because I never had time, and I never understood or had interest in any of the channels there.
I remember channels like Animal Planet and the History Channel, and I really enjoyed them. But now, reality TV seems to be everywhere. VH1 and MTV are barely music oriented anymore. What the hell is this..can anyone explain this change in TV? It is really disappointing.
