The Abu Dhabi Grand Prix is a Formula One race. It was announced in early 2007 at the Abu Dhabi F1 Festival in the United Arab Emirates. The first race took place on November 1 2009, held at the Hermann Tilke designed Yas Marina Circuit.

On June 25, 2008 the FIA announced the provisional 2009 Formula One calendar including the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix as the 19th and final race of the season on November 15. On November 5, 2008, however, it was announced that the race would be held as the season finale on November 1, two weeks before the initially planned date, as the 17th and final race.

The race was Formula One’s first ever day-night race, starting at 17:00 local time. Floodlights used to illuminate the circuit were switched on from the start of the event to ensure there is a seamless transition from daylight to darkness.

Formula 1 first came to Abu Dhabi in 2007 in the guise of the first ever Formula One Festival. Announced in January 2007, the event which took place on 3 February 2007 was free, and the largest gathering of current Formula One cars and drivers outside of a Grand Prix. At the festival it was announced that Abu Dhabi had won the rights to host a Grand Prix from 2009 until 2016. Later that year, Etihad Airways negotiated a three-year deal for them to become sponsors of the Grand Prix.

The Japanese Grand Prix is a race in the calendar of the FIA Formula One World Championship. Traditionally one of the last, if not the last race of the season, the Japanese Grand Prix has been the venue for many title-deciding races, with 12 World Champions being crowned over the 24 Japanese Grands Prix that have been hosted.

The first two Japanese Grands Prix in 1976 and 1977 were held at the Fuji Speedway, before Japan was taken off the calendar. It returned in 1987 at Suzuka, who hosted the Grand Prix exclusively for 20 years and gained a reputation as one of the most challenging F1 circuits. In 2007 the Grand Prix moved back to the newly redesigned Fuji Speedway. After a second race at Fuji in 2008, the race returned to Suzuka in 2009.

The Japanese Grand Prix was supposed to continue alternating between Fuji Speedway and Suzuka Circuit, owned by perennial rivals Toyota and Honda, respectively. There had been speculation that both tracks would host Grands Prix, with the readoption of the Pacific Grand Prix moniker used by the TI Circuit when it hosted Grands Prix in 1994 and 1995.[1] The race made Japan one of only six countries to host more than one Grand Prix in the same season (the others being Great Britain, Spain, Germany, Italy and the USA). It was discontinued primarily due to its location in a remote area of Japan.

In July 2009, Toyota announced it would not host the race at Fuji Speedway in 2010 and beyond due to a downturn in the global economy.

The second practice session was also declared wet, though there were only a handful of damp sections around the circuit. Despite claims from their rivals that the FIA’s newer, more stringent testing procedures for front wings and floors had hurt Red Bull, the Austrian team continued to dominate, with Sebastian Vettel over half a second quicker than team-mate Webber, who was also half a second faster than third-placed Jenson Button. By the end of the session, Fernando Alonso appeared to be on the verge of setting the fastest time when he was fastest in the first two sectors, but made an uncharacteristic mistake at turn seventeen – the scene of Nelson Piquet, Jr.’s controversial crash in 2008 – and ended up sliding down the access road at the next corner. The Spaniard then stalled whilst attempting to rejoin the circuit, forcing him to abandon his car and the session. Adrian Sutil also ran afoul of the circuit when he made a mistake at the notorious turn ten chicane, the ‘Singapore Sling’. His Force India bounced violently over the kerbs, damaging his suspension. The German was later fined US$10,000 by the stewards as he attempted to limp back to the pits with a damaged car. Lewis Hamilton was critical of the reprofiled corner, claiming it was dangerous and unnecessary. The corner was originally conceived to force the cars to take a single-file approach into the next sequence of corners and the narrow Anderson Bridge, but Hamilton claimed that a brake failure could result in a serious accident. The only other driver to have trouble in the session was Renault’s Robert Kubica, who experienced a hydraulics problem that limited his track time in the dry. Heikki Kovalainen was once again the fastest of the newcomers.

The third session was once again declared wet despite a lack of forthcoming rain, with different sections of the circuit drying out at different rates and the surface making it difficult for drivers to tell precisely how wet or dry certain corners were. Vettel was once again fastest, this time ahead of Alonso and Hamilton whilst Jenson Button struggled to place better than thirteenth. Bruno Senna spun twice, once at the chicane and again at turn eighteen, the same place as Alonso’s incident in second practice. Alonso and Kubica almost made contact as the Ferrari driver left the pits whilst Schumacher experienced a heavy landing in the chicane and Nico Hülkenberg had several sideways moments. Timo Glock was the fastest of the newcomers.

Sevilla Fútbol Club S.A.D. is a Spanish professional football club that plays in the top-flight Spanish La Liga championship. The club was established on 14 October 1905, making it the oldest football club from Seville, and the second oldest from Andalusia.

Paris Saint-Germain Football Club (French pronunciation: [paʁi sɛ̃ ʒɛʁmɛ̃]), also known simply as Paris Saint-Germain and familiarly as Paris SG or PSG (IPA: [peɛsʒe]) is a professional football club based in Paris, France. It was founded on August 12, 1970, thanks to the merger of Paris FC (a pool of financial investors) and Stade Saint-Germain. After 20,000 subscriptions from individuals desperate to see an elite football club in Paris, a group of local businessmen, led by Guy Crescent, CEO of Calberson and Pierre-Étienne Guyot, Vice-president of RCF Paris, asked the directors of Stade Sangermanois to become part of their project. The creation of Paris Saint-Germain F.C. marked the reappearance of a major club in Paris after the decline of Racing Paris, Red Star, Stade Français and CA Paris. The club’s motto is “Paris Est Magique” (Paris Is Magic). The official PSG anthem is Allez Paris Saint-Germain by Les Parisiens.[1]

Paris Saint-Germain has been playing in the Ligue 1 since 1974, the current championship record. The capital club is one of the most prestigious outfits in French football having won two League titles, seven French Cups, three League Cups and two Champions Trophies. PSG is, with Olympique de Marseille, one of only two French clubs to have won a European competition, claiming the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup in 1996 and the UEFA Intertoto Cup in 2001.[2] In 1994, Paris was ranked 1st in the Club World Ranking made by the International Federation of Football History & Statistics,[3] and in 1996, Les Rouge-et-Bleu were also ranked 1st in the UEFA coefficient of Top Clubs.[4] The capital club is the only French club to ever achieve these honours. As of 30 August 2010, the club is ranked 105th

A long period of decline followed the success of the 1960s and 1970s. Malcolm Allison rejoined the club to become manager for the second time in 1979, but squandered large sums of money on unsuccessful signings, such as Steve Daley.[19] A succession of managers then followed – seven in the 1980s alone, the first being John Bond who succeeded Allison in October 1980. Under Bond, City reached the 1981 FA Cup final but lost in a replay to Tottenham Hotspur. The following season began well and they went top of the league just after Christmas, only to finish mid-table at the end of the season. They were relegated a year later, and reclaimed their top flight status two years afterwards, only to lose it within another two years. They returned to the top flight again in 1989 and finished fifth in 1991 and 1992 under the management of Peter Reid.[20] However, this was only a temporary respite, and following Reid’s departure Manchester City’s fortunes continued to fade. City were founders of the Premier League upon its creation in 1992, but after finishing ninth in its first season they endured three seasons of struggle before being relegated in 1996. Two years after that, they were relegated to Division Two – becoming the first former winners of a European trophy to be relegated to the third tier of their domestic league.

After relegation, the club underwent off-the-field upheaval, with new chairman David Bernstein introducing greater fiscal discipline.[21] City were promoted at the first attempt, achieved in dramatic fashion in a play-off against Gillingham. A second successive promotion saw City return to the top division, but this proved to have been a step too far for the recovering club, and in 2001 City were relegated once more. Kevin Keegan arrived as the new manager in the close season, bringing an immediate return to the top division as the club won the 2001–02 Division One championship, breaking club records for the number of points gained and goals scored in a season in the process.

FC Red Bull Salzburg is an Austrian football club, based in Wals-Siezenheim. Their home ground is the Red Bull Arena. The club was known as SV Austria Salzburg before being bought by the Red Bull company in 2005 who renamed the club and changed the club’s colours from its traditional violet and white to red and white. The change resulted in some of the team’s fans forming a new club, SV Austria Salzburg. The club has won the Austrian Bundesliga 6 times, and reached the final of the UEFA Cup in 1994.

Manchester City Football Club is an English football club who play in the Premier League and at the City of Manchester Stadium. Founded in 1880 as St. Mark’s (West Gorton), they became Ardwick Association Football Club in 1887 before changing their name to Manchester City Football Club in 1894. The club’s most successful period was in the late 1960s and early 1970s when they won the League Championship, the FA Cup, the League Cup and European Cup Winners’ Cup under the management team of Joe Mercer and Malcolm Allison and with players including Colin Bell, Mike Summerbee and Francis Lee.

Since winning the League Cup in 1976, the club has failed to win any major honours. The club’s decline led to relegation twice in three years in the 1990s, spending the 1998–99 season in the third tier of English football. The club has since regained top flight status, the level at which they have spent the majority of their history. In 2008 they were purchased by the Abu Dhabi United Group, making the club one of the most financially powerful in the world, resulting in the transfers of a number of high profile players. They are currently managed by Roberto Mancini.

The club have long-standing rivalries with several other clubs, particularly the local rivalry with Everton and an intense rivalry with Manchester United. The club’s supporters have been involved in two major tragedies. The first was the Heysel Stadium disaster in 1985, where charging Liverpool fans caused a wall to collapse, resulting in the death of 39 Juventus supporters. The Hillsborough Disaster occurred four years later, 96 Liverpool supporters lost their lives due to a crush against perimeter fencing.

After a lengthy search for investment the club was purchased by George Gillett, Jr. and Tom Hicks in February 2007, in a deal that valued the club at £218.9 million. Liverpool are the sixth most valuable club in the world as of 2010, valued at $822m (£532m), excluding debt.[2] The club is currently seventh in the Deloitte Football Money League.

Steaua was founded on 7 June 1947, at the initiative of several officers of the Romanian Royal House. The establishment took place following a decree signed by General Mihail Lascăr, High Commander of the Romanian Royal Army. The club’s first name was ASA Bucureşti (Asociaţia Sportivă a Armatei Bucureşti – Army Sports Association). It was formed as a sports society with seven initial sections, including football, coached by Coloman Braun-Bogdan.[1] ASA was renamed CSCA (Clubul Sportiv Central al Armatei – Central Sports Club of the Army) in 1948 and CCA (Casa Centrală a Armatei – Central House of the Army) in 1950.[2]

In 1949, CSCA won its first trophy, the Romanian Cup, defeating CSU Cluj 2–1 in the final. Under the name of CCA, the club managed to win three Championship titles in a row in 1951, 1952 and 1953, along with their first Championship-Cup Double in 1951. During the 1950s, the so-called CCA Golden Team became nationally famous.[3] In 1956, the national team of Romania, comprised exclusively of CCA players, took on Yugoslavia in Belgrade and won 1–0. During the same year, CCA, coached by Ilie Savu, was the first Romanian team to enterprise a tournament in England where they achieved noteworthy results against the likes of Luton Town FC, Arsenal FC, Sheffield Wednesday FC and Wolverhampton Wanderers FC.

Olympique de Marseille’s home is the 60,031-person-capacity[1] Stade Vélodrome football stadium in the south of the city, where they have played since 1937[1]. In 1997, they were bought by Franco-Swiss businessman Robert Louis-Dreyfus.

Marseille’s traditional kit colours were white shirts and shorts with Dodger blue socks until 1986. Since 1986 the team is playing with white shirts, white shorts and white socks, and the blue color became lighter due to Adidas marketing. The current badge was adopted in 2004. The club’s motto Droit Au But (French for “Straight to the Goal”) appears under the badge and a star representing the victory in the Champions League is featured on the top. The club enjoys a large fan base, with the highest average all-time attendance in French football. Their average home gate for the 2008–09 season was 52,276, the highest in the Ligue 1.

CFR Cluj (Romanian pronunciation: [t͡ʃefeˌre ˈkluʒ]) is a Romanian professional football club from the city of Cluj-Napoca, Cluj county. The club had spent most of their existence in the lower divisions, except for a spell in Divizia A in the 1970s, until they received significant financial backing from Árpád Pászkány in 2002. CFR Cluj returned to the top flight in 2004 and the following season took in their first UEFA competition, the Intertoto Cup, finishing as runners-up. In 2007–08, CFR Cluj were champions of Liga I for the first time in their history, taking the title away from teams from the city of Bucharest for the first time in 17 years, qualifying for the UEFA Champions League group stages in the process, six years after having been in the third tier of Romanian league football.[2] CFR Cluj started the 2008–09 UEFA Champions League with an unexpected win against Roma, followed by a draw against the previous season’s Champions League finalists, Chelsea. The team has set a record since their major managerial change in 2002, they managed to win seven trophies: the Liga I championship (two times), the Romanian Cup (three times), and the Romanian Supercup (two times).

Fussball Club Basel 1893, widely known as FC Basel is a Swiss football club based in Basel.

Basel is one of the most successful clubs in Swiss football, having won the Swiss Super League 13 times, the third most for any Swiss club. They were most successful in the late 1960s and 1970s, winning the title a total of seven times between 1967 and 1980. The 1980s saw hard times for Basel as they had an absence from European competition for many years and they were relegated in 1987. In the 2000s Basel returned to the top of Swiss football; winning their first title for 22 years in 2002 and another four titles in 2004, 2005, 2008 and 2010.

They have competed in European competition every season since 1999–2000. In the 2001–02 season the club reached the UEFA Intertoto Cup final, losing to Aston Villa, in the 2002/03 season they qualified for the Second Group Stage of the UEFA Champions League and in the 2005/06 season they reached the Quarter-Finals of the UEFA Cup.
