Manchester City Football Club is an English football club who play in the Premier League and at the City of Manchester Stadium. Founded in 1880 as St. Mark’s (West Gorton), they became Ardwick Association Football Club in 1887 before changing their name to Manchester City Football Club in 1894. The club’s most successful period was in the late 1960s and early 1970s when they won the League Championship, the FA Cup, the League Cup and European Cup Winners’ Cup under the management team of Joe Mercer and Malcolm Allison and with players including Colin Bell, Mike Summerbee and Francis Lee.
Since winning the League Cup in 1976, the club has failed to win any major honours. The club’s decline led to relegation twice in three years in the 1990s, spending the 1998–99 season in the third tier of English football. The club has since regained top flight status, the level at which they have spent the majority of their history. In 2008 they were purchased by the Abu Dhabi United Group, making the club one of the most financially powerful in the world, resulting in the transfers of a number of high profile players. They are currently managed by Roberto Mancini.
FC Red Bull Salzburg is an Austrian football club, based in Wals-Siezenheim. Their home ground is the Red Bull Arena. The club was known as SV Austria Salzburg before being bought by the Red Bull company in 2005 who renamed the club and changed the club’s colours from its traditional violet and white to red and white. The change resulted in some of the team’s fans forming a new club, SV Austria Salzburg. The club has won the Austrian Bundesliga 6 times, and reached the final of the UEFA Cup in 1994.

The club have long-standing rivalries with several other clubs, particularly the local rivalry with Everton and an intense rivalry with Manchester United. The club’s supporters have been involved in two major tragedies. The first was the Heysel Stadium disaster in 1985, where charging Liverpool fans caused a wall to collapse, resulting in the death of 39 Juventus supporters. The Hillsborough Disaster occurred four years later, 96 Liverpool supporters lost their lives due to a crush against perimeter fencing.
After a lengthy search for investment the club was purchased by George Gillett, Jr. and Tom Hicks in February 2007, in a deal that valued the club at £218.9 million. Liverpool are the sixth most valuable club in the world as of 2010, valued at $822m (£532m), excluding debt.[2] The club is currently seventh in the Deloitte Football Money League.
Steaua was founded on 7 June 1947, at the initiative of several officers of the Romanian Royal House. The establishment took place following a decree signed by General Mihail Lascăr, High Commander of the Romanian Royal Army. The club’s first name was ASA Bucureşti (Asociaţia Sportivă a Armatei Bucureşti – Army Sports Association). It was formed as a sports society with seven initial sections, including football, coached by Coloman Braun-Bogdan.[1] ASA was renamed CSCA (Clubul Sportiv Central al Armatei – Central Sports Club of the Army) in 1948 and CCA (Casa Centrală a Armatei – Central House of the Army) in 1950.[2]
In 1949, CSCA won its first trophy, the Romanian Cup, defeating CSU Cluj 2–1 in the final. Under the name of CCA, the club managed to win three Championship titles in a row in 1951, 1952 and 1953, along with their first Championship-Cup Double in 1951. During the 1950s, the so-called CCA Golden Team became nationally famous.[3] In 1956, the national team of Romania, comprised exclusively of CCA players, took on Yugoslavia in Belgrade and won 1–0. During the same year, CCA, coached by Ilie Savu, was the first Romanian team to enterprise a tournament in England where they achieved noteworthy results against the likes of Luton Town FC, Arsenal FC, Sheffield Wednesday FC and Wolverhampton Wanderers FC.

Roma’s colours of maroon red with a golden yellow trim represents the traditional colours of the Eternal City, the official seal of the Comune di Roma features the same colours.[31] The gold symbolizes God in Roman Catholicism,[32] while the maroon represents imperial dignity.[33] White shorts and black socks are usually worn with the maroon red shirt, however in particularly high key games the shorts and socks are the same colour as the home shirt.[34]
Roma’s crest used from 1979 to 1997, also used for their 2009/10 third kit.
The kit itself was originally worn by Roman Football Club; one of the three clubs who merged to form the current incarnation in 1927.[35] Because of the colours they wear, Roma are often nicknamed i giallorossi meaning the yellow-reds.[36] Roma’s away kit is traditionally white, with a third kit changing colour from time to time.
Maybe because of modern sport marketing, the last few years have seen the golden trim and details substituted by light orange. Modern alternate kits have included all orange and orange-maroon versions.
A popular nickname for the club is i lupi (the wolves), the animal has always featured on the club’s badge in different forms throughout their history. Currently the emblem of the team is the one which was used when the club was first founded. It portrays the female wolf with the two infant brothers Romulus and Remus, illustrating the myth of the creation of Rome,[37] superimposed on a bipartite golden yellow over maroon red shield.[38]
In the myth from which the club take their nickname and logo, the twins (sons of Mars and Rhea Silvia) are thrown into the River Tiber by their uncle Amulius, a she-wolf saved the twins and looked after them.[37] Eventually the two twins took revenge on Amulius, before falling out themselves; Romulus killed Remus and as thus was made king of a new city named in his honour, Rome.
In the original club constitution, Bayern’s colours were named as white and blue, but the club played in white shirts with black shorts until 1905, when Bayern joined MSC. MSC decreed that the footballers would have to play in red shorts. Also the younger players were called red-shorts, which was meant as an insult.[1] Bayern has played in red and white for most of its existence, but blue has been included on occasion. In the 1969–70 season the shirts were striped in blue and white, and the shorts and socks were also blue. A similar style appeared in 1995, when blue was for the first time the dominant colour. From 1999 on Bayern returned to its original colours.[4]
The club’s away kit has had a wide range of colours over the years, including white, black, blue, and gold-green. Bayern also features a distinct international kit. As of 2009, the home kit is red, the away kit is dark blue, and the international kit is white.[32]
In the 1980s and 90s, Bayern used a special away kit when playing at 1. FC Kaiserslautern, representing the Brazilian colours blue and yellow, a superstition born from the fact that the club found it hard to win there

The club was founded as a cricket club in 1899 by British expatriates Alfred Edwards and Herbert Kilpin,[6] who came from the British city of Nottingham. In honor of its origins, the club has retained the English spelling of its city’s name, instead of changing it to the Italian Milano, although it was forced to do so during the fascist regime. Milan won its first Italian championship in 1901 and a further two in succession in 1906 and 1907.[5]
In 1908, the club experienced a split caused by internal disagreements over the signing of foreign players, which led to the forming of another Milan-based team, Internazionale.[12] Following these events, Milan did not manage to win a single domestic title until 1950–51.[7] In 1963, the club ensured its first continental title by beating Benfica in the final of the European Cup.[13] This success was repeated in 1969, and followed by an Intercontinental Cup title the same year.[7] After the retirement of Gianni Rivera, Milan went into a period of decline, during which the club was involved in the 1980 Totonero scandal and relegated to Serie B as punishment,[14] for the first time in its history. The scandal was centered around a betting syndicate paying players and officials to fix the outcome of matches.[14] Milan quickly returned to Serie A but was relegated to Serie B one year later as the team ended its 1981–82 campaign in third last place.
In 1986, entrepreneur Silvio Berlusconi acquired the club and immediately invested a lot of money in the team,[15] appointing rising coach Arrigo Sacchi at the helm of the rossoneri and signing a Dutch trio of Ruud Gullit, Marco van Basten and Frank Rijkaard.[15] This was the beginning of the most successful time in the club’s history, as Milan won seven domestic titles, five Champions League trophies, five UEFA Super Cups, two Intercontinental Cups and one Fifa Club World Cup.[7]
More recently, the club was involved in the 2006 Serie A scandal where five teams were accused of fixing matches by selecting favorable referees.[16] A police inquiry excluded any involvement of Milan managers,[citation needed] but FIGC unilaterally decided that it had sufficient evidence to charge Milan vice-president, Adriano Galliani. As a result, Milan was initially punished with a 15 point deduction and consequently did not qualify for the Champions League. An appeal saw that penalty reduced to eight points,[17] which allowed the club to retain its 2006–07 Champions League participation. Milan subsequently won the competition, lifting the European Cup for the seventh time.
The club Association de la Jeunesse Auxerroise was founded in 1905, by the priest Father Ernest Abbé Deschamps. The club quickly tasted success, becoming a force in the Catholic league F.G.S.P.F. In 1908, the club even reached the F.G.S.P.F. French Championship final, losing 8–1 however. At the end of the First World War, the club was expelled from its ground. Father Deschamps acquired several pieces of land along the Yonne on the Vaux road, which later formed the Abbé Deschamps Stadium.
Auxerre made its first steps in Division 1 on 24 July 1980 against Bastia in Toulon. Auxerre lost the match 2–0. On 20 November 1980, Andrzej Szarmach signed for Auxerre having received consent from the Polish Football Association. He started two days later at home against Lyon and scored the first of his ninety-four goals in Division 1. AJA’s first season in Division 1 was remarkable for two particular performances: on December 13, 1980, at Parc des Princes against Paris Saint-Germain (3–2), and then on April 7, 1981, at Stade Marcel Saupin against FC Nantes for a 1–0 win, notable as Nantes had not lost a home game for five years and 92 games (between April 15, 1976 and April 7, 1981). In the next two seasons, AJA finished fifteenth and eighth respectively.

The 1980s were a period of off-field turmoil for Bayern, with many changes in personnel and financial problems. On the field, Paul Breitner and Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, termed FC Breitnigge, led the team to Bundesliga titles in 1980 and 1981. Apart from a DFB-Pokal win in 1982, two relatively unsuccessful seasons followed, after which Breitner retired and former coach Udo Lattek returned. Bayern won the 1984 cup, then went on to win five championships in six seasons, including a double in 1986. However, European success was elusive during the decade; Bayern only managed to claim the runners-up spot in the European Cup in 1982 and 1987.[19]
Jupp Heynckes was hired as coach in 1987, but after two consecutive championships in 1988–89 and 1989–90 Bayern’s form dipped. After a second place in 1990–91 the club finished just five points above the relegation places in 1991–92. In the season of 1992–93, Bayern Munich lost out in the UEFA Cup 2nd round to the (at the time) English Premier League side Norwich City F.C., who remain the only English football club to beat them at their former home ground the Olympic Stadium. Success returned when Franz Beckenbauer took over for the second half of the 1993–94 season, winning the Championship again after a four year gap. Beckenbauer was then appointed club president.[20]
His successors as coach, Giovanni Trapattoni and Otto Rehhagel both finished trophyless after a season, not meeting the club’s high expectations. During this time Bayern’s players frequently appeared in the gossip pages of the press rather than the sports pages, resulting in the nickname FC Hollywood. Franz Beckenbauer briefly returned at the end of the 1995–96 season as caretaker coach and led his team to victory in the UEFA Cup 1995–96, beating Girondins de Bordeaux in the final. For the 1996–97 season Giovanni Trapattoni returned to win the championship. But in the following season Bayern lost the title to the just promoted 1. FC Kaiserslautern and Trapattoni had to take his leave for the second time.
Roma were able to add another cup to their collection in 1972, with a 3–1 victory over Blackpool in the Anglo-Italian Cup.[16] During much of the 1970s Roma’s appearance in the top half of Serie A was sporadic. The best place the club were able to achieve during the decade was third in 1974–75.[5] Notable players who turned out for the club during this period included midfielders Giancarlo De Sisti and Francesco Rocca.
The dawning of a newly successful era in Roma’s footballing history was brought in with another Coppa Italia victory, they beat Torino on penalties to win the 1979–80 cup.[14] Roma would reach heights in the league which they had not touched since the 1940s by narrowly and controversially finishing as runners-up to Juventus in 1980–81.[17] Former Milan player Nils Liedholm was the manager at the time, with prominent players such as Bruno Conti, Agostino Di Bartolomei, Roberto Pruzzo and Falcão.[18]
The second scudetto did not elude Roma for much longer; in 1982–83 the Roman club won the title for the first time in 41 years, amidst joyous celebrations in the capital.[19] The following season Roma finished as runners-up in Italy[5] and collected a Coppa Italia title,[14] they also finished as runners-up in the European Cup final of 1984.[20] The European Cup final with Liverpool ended in a 1–1 draw with a goal from Pruzzo, but Roma eventually lost the penalty shoot-out.[20] Roma’s successful run in the 1980s would finish with a runners-up spot in 1985–86[5] and a Coppa Italia victory, beating out Sampdoria 3–2.[14]
After that a comparative decline began in the league, one of the few league highs from the following period was a third place finish in 1987–88.[5] At the start of the 1990s the club was involved in an all-Italian UEFA Cup final, where they lost 2–1 to Internazionale in 1991;[21] the same season the club won its seventh Coppa Italia trophy[14] and ended runners-up to Sampdoria in the Supercoppa Italiana. Aside from finishing runners-up to Torino in a Coppa Italia final,[14] the rest of the decade was largely sub-par in the history of Roma; especially in the league where the highest they could manage was fourth in 1997–98.[5] The early 1990s also saw the emergence of homegrown striker Francesco Totti who would go on to be an important member of the team and the club’s iconic captain.

In 1930, Chelsea featured in one of the earliest football films, The Great Game.[61] One-time Chelsea centre forward, Jack Cock, who by then was playing for Millwall, was the star of the film and several scenes were shot at Stamford Bridge, including the pitch, the boardroom, and the dressing rooms. It included guest appearances by then-Chelsea players Andrew Wilson, George Mills, and Sam Millington.[62] Owing to the notoriety of the Chelsea Headhunters, a football firm associated with the club, Chelsea have also featured in films about football hooliganism, most recently The Football Factory.[63] Chelsea also appear in the Hindi film Jhoom Barabar Jhoom.[64]
Up until the 1950s, the club had a long-running association with the music halls, with their underachievement often providing material for comedians such as George Robey.[65] It culminated in comedian Norman Long’s release of a comic song in 1933, ironically titled “On the Day That Chelsea Went and Won the Cup”, the lyrics of which describe a series of bizarre and improbable occurrences on the hypothetical day when Chelsea finally won a trophy.[8]
The song “Blue is the Colour” was released as a single in the build-up to the 1972 League Cup Final, with all members of Chelsea’s first team squad singing; it reached number five in the UK Singles Chart.[66] The song was later adapted to “White is the Colour” and adopted as an anthem by the Vancouver Whitecaps in Canada.[67] In the build-up to the 1997 FA Cup final, the song “Blue Day”, performed by Suggs and members of the Chelsea squad, reached number 22 in the UK charts.[68] Bryan Adams, a fan of Chelsea, dedicated the song “We’re Gonna Win” from the album 18 Til I Die to the club.
MŠK Žilina was founded towards the end of 1908 under the Hungarian name Zsolnai Testgyakorlók Köre. Group of football and tennis pioneers residing in the town along with local merchants, workers from drapery factories and students played important roles in the foundation of the club. After lengthy preparations, the club was officially registered on June 20, 1909. The club won its first Slovak championship in 1928 followed by the success in 1929 and was among the most notable teams in Slovakia for almost two decades.

Real Madrid’s origins go back to when football was introduced to Madrid by the academics and students of the Institución libre de enseñanza, which included several Oxbridge graduates. They founded Football Club Sky in 1897, playing on Sunday mornings at Moncloa. It split into two clubs in 1900: New Foot-Ball de Madrid and Club Español de Madrid. The latter club split again in 1902, resulting in the formation of Real Madrid Football Club on March 6 in 1902.[2] Three years after its foundation, in 1905, Madrid FC won its first title after defeating Athletic Bilbao in the Spanish Cup final. The club became one of the founding sides of the Royal Spanish Football Federation on 4 January 1909, when club president Adolfo Meléndez signed the foundation agreement of the Spanish FA. After moving between grounds the team moved to the Campo de O’Donnell in 1912.[5] In 1920, the club’s name was changed to Real Madrid after King Alfonso XIII granted the title of Real (Royal) to the club.
In 1929, the first Spanish football league was founded. Real Madrid led the first edition until the last match, a loss to Athletic Bilbao, meant they finished runners-up to Barcelona.[7] Real Madrid won its first League title in the 1931–32 season. The Whites won the League again the following year, becoming the first side to have won the championship twice.
In 1955, professional football was finally permitted in the Netherlands. Ajax was still far from the international top, as was demonstrated in the European Cup match against Vasas SC, where they were beaten by the Hungarians 4–0 in the Népstadion). Similar European failures followed in 1960, with Ajax being knocked out by the Norwegian amateurs of Fredrikstad FK and in the Cup Winners’ Cup in 1961 by Újpest FC of Ferenc Bene.
Ajax achieved some success on the domestic level, earning the first Eredivisie-championship in 1957 and again in 1960 – the 1960 title decided by a playoff after equalling in points with arch-rivals Feyenoord. Ajax cruised to a 5–1 victory with a hat trick by striker Wim Bleijenberg.
Bleijenberg was not the top scorer however. Henk Groot – the younger brother of Cees Groot who scored 100 goals for Ajax in his 5 year stay – arrived in 1959 from Stormvogels and scored 38 goals in 1959/60 and 41 goals in 1960/61. He was a vital part of Ajax in the early sixties, replacing star striker Piet van der Kuil who left for PSV in 1960. Alongside the man who would later become Mister Ajax, Sjaak Swart, Co Prins, Ton Pronk, Bennie Muller and a young Piet Keizer, Ajax added the National Cup in 1961 and the Intertoto Cup 1962 to their trophy cabinet.
