The episodes were written by executive producers/show runners Carlton Cuse and Damon Lindelof; “Part 1″ was directed by co-executive producer Stephen Williams, while executive producer Jack Bender directed “Part 2″. The title is a reference to The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.

The second part was watched by 12 million Americans, making Lost the most watched show of the week, for the first time in the show’s history. Both parts were met with critical acclaim. Matthew Fox’s acting in his flashforward scenes was praised, as was Michael Giacchino’s musical score. The latter part of the episode was nominated for an Emmy Award for editing, but did not win.

The narrative takes place in late December 2004, 100 days after the crash of Oceanic Flight 815. The survivors of the crash team up with the Others, natives of the island where the plane crashed, to confront the mercenaries from the freighter Kahana, who have come to the island. Following this, some of the survivors escape the island and Ben Linus (Michael Emerson) moves the island. Flashforwards show the first actions of the Oceanic Six, those who are rescued, after returning home in January 2005, and their lives in late 2007. The cliffhanger from the previous season finale, “Through the Looking Glass,” is resolved by revealing John Locke (Terry O’Quinn) to be dead and in the coffin that Jack Shephard (Matthew Fox) visits in that episode.

Most of the narrative of “Meet Kevin Johnson” consists of a continuous flashback—the longest in the show’s history—showing what happened to Michael in the month that he spent away in New York and on the freighter, primarily his recruitment aboard the freighter Kahana as a spy for the Others.

It was first aired in the United States and Canada on March 13, 2008. It is the first episode to feature Harold Perrineau since his departure at the last episode of the second season, and features Zoë Bell as a guest star. “Ji Yeon” was watched by 12 million American viewers and received mostly positive reviews. Before the premiere of the fourth season, the principal cast of Lost called “Ji Yeon” the most shocking of the first seven episodes. The title of the episode is the name of Sun’s daughter, and means “flower of wisdom.”

The episode’s story focuses on married couple Sun (Yunjin Kim) and Jin Kwon (Daniel Dae Kim). In late 2004, on the island, they debate whether to defect to the rival faction of survivors led by John Locke (Terry O’Quinn). Intercut throughout the episode, a series of off-island scenes show Sun about to give birth and Jin experiencing a series of difficulties in his efforts to reach the hospital with a gift of a stuffed panda. The ending shows that Jin’s and Sun’s scenes do not focus on the same birth; Jin’s scenes are flashbacks to events before the plane crash, while Sun’s are flashforwards to sometime after she escapes the island. A subplot follows Sayid Jarrah (Naveen Andrews) and Desmond Hume (Henry Ian Cusick) on board the Kahana, where they learn more about the freighter’s mission and find somebody they once knew.

In flashbacks that depict events on the island, Juliet Burke (Elizabeth Mitchell) discovers that her boss Ben Linus (Michael Emerson), the leader of the island’s original inhabitants referred to as the Others, is in love with her.

The writers advanced several story lines with “The Other Woman”. The episode furthers Juliet’s back story and relationships, sheds more light on the season’s new characters, and features the first appearance of Harper Stanhope (Andrea Roth). The introduction of the Tempest further develops the series’ mythology, specifically the “purge”. In the third season, the purge was mentioned in episode “Enter 77″ and seen in “The Man Behind the Curtain”.

“The Other Woman” was watched by 15 million Americans and received mixed reviews. Critics from the Los Angeles Times, Entertainment Weekly, and BuddyTV deemed it the worst episode of the season, partially due to a flashback storyline that was seemingly recycled from the third season episode, “One of Us”. Another criticism was that audiences actually learned more about Ben than Juliet, despite the focus on Juliet. Emerson also received more praise for his acting than Mitchell, who plays Juliet; however, Mitchell won a Saturn Award for her performance. Positive reviews commended the action in the episode’s climax.

The writers claim to have been careful not to create a temporal paradox when dealing with time travel, although whether it is possible to avoid paradox in time travel is debatable.
