Juventus were founded as Sport Club Juventus in late 1897 by pupils from the Massimo D’Azeglio Lyceum school in Turin,[20] but were renamed as Foot-Ball Club Juventus two years later.[3] The club joined the Italian Football Championship during 1900. During this period the team wore a pink and black kit. Juventus first won the league championship in 1905 while playing at their Velodromo Umberto I ground. By this time the club colours had changed to black and white stripes, inspired by English side Notts County.[21]

There was a split at the club in 1906, after some of the staff considered moving Juve out of Turin.[3] President Alfredo Dick was unhappy with this and left with some prominent players to found FBC Torino which in turn spawned the Derby della Mole.[22] Juventus spent much of this period steadily rebuilding after the split, surviving the First World War.

Lech Poznań is considered to have the strongest fan support in Poland due to club’s highest average attendance in Ekstraklasa and the atmosphere during the games.

For over a decade Lech supporters have a fellowship with fans from Arka Gdynia and Cracovia Kraków (the popular watchword: ‘Miłość, Wiara, Walka – Lech Cracovia Arka’ i.e. ‘Love, Faith, Fight – Lech, Cracovia, Arka’). Close friendship links Lech fans also with KSZO Ostrowiec supporters (since 1992).

Relations with local rival Warta Poznań are neutral as the clubs have almost always played in different leagues.

Manchester City Football Club is an English football club who play in the Premier League and at the City of Manchester Stadium. Founded in 1880 as St. Mark’s (West Gorton), they became Ardwick Association Football Club in 1887 before changing their name to Manchester City Football Club in 1894. The club’s most successful period was in the late 1960s and early 1970s when they won the League Championship, the FA Cup, the League Cup and European Cup Winners’ Cup under the management team of Joe Mercer and Malcolm Allison and with players including Colin Bell, Mike Summerbee and Francis Lee.

Since winning the League Cup in 1976, the club has failed to win any major honours. The club’s decline led to relegation twice in three years in the 1990s, spending the 1998–99 season in the third tier of English football. The club has since regained top flight status, the level at which they have spent the majority of their history. In 2008 they were purchased by the Abu Dhabi United Group, making the club one of the most financially powerful in the world, resulting in the transfers of a number of high profile players. They are currently managed by Roberto Mancini.

FC Red Bull Salzburg is an Austrian football club, based in Wals-Siezenheim. Their home ground is the Red Bull Arena. The club was known as SV Austria Salzburg before being bought by the Red Bull company in 2005 who renamed the club and changed the club’s colours from its traditional violet and white to red and white. The change resulted in some of the team’s fans forming a new club, SV Austria Salzburg. The club has won the Austrian Bundesliga 6 times, and reached the final of the UEFA Cup in 1994.

The club have long-standing rivalries with several other clubs, particularly the local rivalry with Everton and an intense rivalry with Manchester United. The club’s supporters have been involved in two major tragedies. The first was the Heysel Stadium disaster in 1985, where charging Liverpool fans caused a wall to collapse, resulting in the death of 39 Juventus supporters. The Hillsborough Disaster occurred four years later, 96 Liverpool supporters lost their lives due to a crush against perimeter fencing.

After a lengthy search for investment the club was purchased by George Gillett, Jr. and Tom Hicks in February 2007, in a deal that valued the club at £218.9 million. Liverpool are the sixth most valuable club in the world as of 2010, valued at $822m (£532m), excluding debt.[2] The club is currently seventh in the Deloitte Football Money League.

Steaua was founded on 7 June 1947, at the initiative of several officers of the Romanian Royal House. The establishment took place following a decree signed by General Mihail Lascăr, High Commander of the Romanian Royal Army. The club’s first name was ASA Bucureşti (Asociaţia Sportivă a Armatei Bucureşti – Army Sports Association). It was formed as a sports society with seven initial sections, including football, coached by Coloman Braun-Bogdan.[1] ASA was renamed CSCA (Clubul Sportiv Central al Armatei – Central Sports Club of the Army) in 1948 and CCA (Casa Centrală a Armatei – Central House of the Army) in 1950.[2]

In 1949, CSCA won its first trophy, the Romanian Cup, defeating CSU Cluj 2–1 in the final. Under the name of CCA, the club managed to win three Championship titles in a row in 1951, 1952 and 1953, along with their first Championship-Cup Double in 1951. During the 1950s, the so-called CCA Golden Team became nationally famous.[3] In 1956, the national team of Romania, comprised exclusively of CCA players, took on Yugoslavia in Belgrade and won 1–0. During the same year, CCA, coached by Ilie Savu, was the first Romanian team to enterprise a tournament in England where they achieved noteworthy results against the likes of Luton Town FC, Arsenal FC, Sheffield Wednesday FC and Wolverhampton Wanderers FC.

On departure to Real Madrid in 1991, Beenhakker was replaced by Louis van Gaal, the former assistant-coach. Like Cruyff, van Gaal rapidly made his mark by altering Ajax’ tactics. Also like Cruijff, his efforts were rewarded in his first season at the helm by winning the 1992 UEFA Cup after a thrilling final against AC Torino. Although he did not play the final, the tournament saw the arrival of Dennis Bergkamp who contributed six goals during the competition. Despite Bergkamp being the top goalscorer in Dutch football in 1991, 1992, Ajax once again finished as runners up to PSV in the league. In 1992/93 Ajax even had to settle for a third spot, for first time since 1984, but won the KNVB Cup.

In 1993, Bergkamp and Wim Jonk left to Internazionale, allowing Finn Jari Litmanen to establish himself as the new number 10 of Ajax. Aside from Litmanen, Ajax attracted Finidi George and the return of Frank Rijkaard, providing a base for van Gaal to build on.

The 1994–95 season saw the return of European success after two decades, with Ajax winning the UEFA Champions League 1994-95 and the league title. The season saw an unbeaten run in the national league and the final season for Frank Rijkaard, while striker Patrick Kluivert had an excellent start to his season, with the then 18-year-old coming off the bench to score a late winner to beat AC Milan in the final of the Champions League. Ajax went on to beat Brazilian side Grêmio on penalties to win the Intercontinental Cup. The following season, Ajax continued to succeed on the European front, succumbing only to Juventus on penalties in the European Cup final.

However, the subsequent period saw the departure of manager van Gaal along with an exodus of many key players, several on free transfers following the Bosman ruling. Clarence Seedorf departed in 1995; Edgar Davids, Michael Reiziger, Finidi George, and Nwankwo Kanu in 1996; Patrick Kluivert, Marc Overmars, and Winston Bogarde in 1997; Ronald de Boer and Frank de Boer in 1998; and Edwin van der Sar and Jari Litmanen in 1999, together with the retirement of Frank Rijkaard in 1995 and Danny Blind in 1999. Van Gaal’s replacement, Morten Olsen, attracted Danish national team captain Michael Laudrup to the club. Ajax won the league championship and the Dutch cup. Despite this success, Olsen could not replace the key players who had departed or maintain the success under van Gaal. In Olsen’s second year at the club, tension arose between Olsen and the Dutch players Ronald de Boer and Frank de Boer, and Olsen was sacked in 1998. In 1999, Ajax finished 6th in the league, their lowest position in over 20 years.

In July 2000, Florentino Pérez was elected club president.[20] His campaign vowed to erase the club’s debt and modernize the club’s facilities. However, the primary electoral promise that propelled Pérez to victory was the signing of Luís Figo.[21] The following year, the club controversially got its training ground rezoned and used the money to begin assembling the famous Galáctico side including players such as Zinédine Zidane, Ronaldo, Luís Figo, Roberto Carlos, Raúl and David Beckham. It is debatable whether the gamble paid off, as despite a European Cup win in 2002, followed by the League in 2003, the club failed to win a major trophy for the next three seasons.[22]

Ramón Calderón was elected as club president on 2 July 2006 and subsequently appointed Fabio Capello as the new coach and Predrag Mijatović as the new sporting director. Real Madrid won the La Liga title in 2007 for the first time in four years but Capello was sacked.[23] In the 2007–08 season, The Whites won the domestic league for the 31st time, achieving their first consecutive league title in eighteen years.[24] On 1 June 2009, Florentino Pérez regained Real Madrid’s presidency.[25][26] Pérez continued with the Galácticos policy pursued in his first term, buying Kaká from A.C. Milan[27] then purchasing Cristiano Ronaldo from Manchester United for a record breaking £80 million.

The club was founded as a cricket club in 1899 by British expatriates Alfred Edwards and Herbert Kilpin,[6] who came from the British city of Nottingham. In honor of its origins, the club has retained the English spelling of its city’s name, instead of changing it to the Italian Milano, although it was forced to do so during the fascist regime. Milan won its first Italian championship in 1901 and a further two in succession in 1906 and 1907.[5]

In 1908, the club experienced a split caused by internal disagreements over the signing of foreign players, which led to the forming of another Milan-based team, Internazionale.[12] Following these events, Milan did not manage to win a single domestic title until 1950–51.[7] In 1963, the club ensured its first continental title by beating Benfica in the final of the European Cup.[13] This success was repeated in 1969, and followed by an Intercontinental Cup title the same year.[7] After the retirement of Gianni Rivera, Milan went into a period of decline, during which the club was involved in the 1980 Totonero scandal and relegated to Serie B as punishment,[14] for the first time in its history. The scandal was centered around a betting syndicate paying players and officials to fix the outcome of matches.[14] Milan quickly returned to Serie A but was relegated to Serie B one year later as the team ended its 1981–82 campaign in third last place.

In 1986, entrepreneur Silvio Berlusconi acquired the club and immediately invested a lot of money in the team,[15] appointing rising coach Arrigo Sacchi at the helm of the rossoneri and signing a Dutch trio of Ruud Gullit, Marco van Basten and Frank Rijkaard.[15] This was the beginning of the most successful time in the club’s history, as Milan won seven domestic titles, five Champions League trophies, five UEFA Super Cups, two Intercontinental Cups and one Fifa Club World Cup.[7]

More recently, the club was involved in the 2006 Serie A scandal where five teams were accused of fixing matches by selecting favorable referees.[16] A police inquiry excluded any involvement of Milan managers,[citation needed] but FIGC unilaterally decided that it had sufficient evidence to charge Milan vice-president, Adriano Galliani. As a result, Milan was initially punished with a 15 point deduction and consequently did not qualify for the Champions League. An appeal saw that penalty reduced to eight points,[17] which allowed the club to retain its 2006–07 Champions League participation. Milan subsequently won the competition, lifting the European Cup for the seventh time.

The club Association de la Jeunesse Auxerroise was founded in 1905, by the priest Father Ernest Abbé Deschamps. The club quickly tasted success, becoming a force in the Catholic league F.G.S.P.F. In 1908, the club even reached the F.G.S.P.F. French Championship final, losing 8–1 however. At the end of the First World War, the club was expelled from its ground. Father Deschamps acquired several pieces of land along the Yonne on the Vaux road, which later formed the Abbé Deschamps Stadium.

Auxerre made its first steps in Division 1 on 24 July 1980 against Bastia in Toulon. Auxerre lost the match 2–0. On 20 November 1980, Andrzej Szarmach signed for Auxerre having received consent from the Polish Football Association. He started two days later at home against Lyon and scored the first of his ninety-four goals in Division 1. AJA’s first season in Division 1 was remarkable for two particular performances: on December 13, 1980, at Parc des Princes against Paris Saint-Germain (3–2), and then on April 7, 1981, at Stade Marcel Saupin against FC Nantes for a 1–0 win, notable as Nantes had not lost a home game for five years and 92 games (between April 15, 1976 and April 7, 1981). In the next two seasons, AJA finished fifteenth and eighth respectively.

FC Bayern Munich (German: Fußball-Club Bayern München, IPA: [ˈbaɪ.ɐn ˈmʏnçən]) is a German sports club based in Munich, Bavaria. It is best known for its professional football team, which is the most successful club in German football, having won 22 German titles and 15 cups.

The club was founded in 1900 by eleven football players led by Franz John.[1] Although Bayern won its first national championship in 1932,[2] the club was not selected for the Bundesliga at its inception in 1963.[3] In the middle of the 1970s, the club had its period of greatest success, when the famous team led by Franz Beckenbauer won the European Cup three times in a row (1974–76). In recent years they have been by far the most successful team in German football, winning six of the last ten championships. The club’s last international title was the Intercontinental Cup in 2001, though they won their fourth European Cup the same year.

Since the beginning of the 2005–06 season, Bayern plays its home games in the Allianz Arena. Previously the team had played for 33 years in the Olympic Stadium. The team colours are red and white, and the team crest shows the colours of Bavaria.[4]

Bayern is a membership-based club with more than 152,000 members.[5] There are also more than 2,500 officially-registered fan clubs with about 181,700 members.[6] The club has other departments for chess, handball, basketball, gymnastics, bowling, table tennis, referees, and senior football with more than 1,100 active members.

Associazione Sportiva Roma, (BIT: ASR, LSE: 0DMN) commonly referred to as simply Roma, is an Italian professional football club from Rome. Founded by a merger in 1927, Roma have participated in the top-tier of Italian football for all of their existence bar one season in the early 50s (1951–52). For their 59th season in a row (78th overall), Roma are competing in Serie A for 2010–11.

Roma have won Serie A three times, first in 1941–42 then in 1982–83 and again in 2000–01, as well as winning nine Coppa Italia titles and two Supercoppa Italiana titles. On the European stage Roma won an Inter-Cities Fairs Cup in 1960–61, coming close to European Cup glory in 1983–84 (lost the one-legged final played at home against Liverpool after a penalty shootout), and finishing as runners-up in the UEFA Cup for 1990–91 (two-legged aggregate defeat against Internazionale).

Home games are currently played at the Stadio Olimpico, a venue they share with city rivals Lazio. With a capacity of over 72,000, it is the second largest of its kind in Italy, with only San Siro able to seat more. In September 2009 the club unveiled plans to build a new 55,000-capacity stadium in the western suburbs of Rome. Its design will be modeled after English football stadiums with the objective being to give fans a closer view of the pitch.
