Ballspielverein Borussia (BVB) Dortmund is a German sports club based in Dortmund, North Rhine-Westphalia and is best known as one of the most successful clubs in German football. In addition to six German football championships and two German Cup victories, Dortmund won the Cup Winners’ Cup in 1966 (becoming the first German team to win a European title) and the UEFA Champions League in 1997.

The club was founded on 19 December 1909 by a group of young men unhappy with church-sponsored Trinity Youth, where they played football under the stern and unsympathetic eye of the local parish priest. Father Dewald was blocked at the door when he tried to break up the organizing meeting being held in a room of the local pub, Zum Wildschütz. The name Borussia is Latin for Prussia and was taken from the nearby Borussia brewery. The team began play in blue and white striped shirts with a red sash, and black shorts. In 1913, they donned the black and yellow stripe so familiar today.

Over the next decades the club enjoyed only modest success playing in local leagues. They had a brush with bankruptcy in 1929 when an attempt to boost the club’s fortunes by signing some paid professional footballers failed miserably and left the team deep in debt. They survived only through the generosity of a local supporter who covered the team’s shortfall out of his own pocket.

Fußball-Club St. Pauli is a German sports club based in the St. Pauli quarter of Hamburg. The football section is part of a larger club that also has Rugby (FC St. Pauli Rugby), American football, baseball, bowling, boxing, chess, cycling, handball, skittles, softball and table tennis teams.

In 2003/04 they dropped down to the Regionalliga, at that time the third football division in Germany and remained there for four years. In 2007, St. Pauli were promoted back to the 2. Fußball-Bundesliga and in 2010, FC St. Pauli has clinched promotion into the Bundesliga.

While the footballers have enjoyed only modest success on the field, the club is widely recognised for its unique culture and has a large popular following as one of the country’s “Kult” clubs.

FC Bayern München was founded by members of a Munich gymnastics club (MTV 1879). When a congregation of members of MTV 1879 decided on February 27, 1900 that the footballers of the club would not be allowed to join the German Football Association (DFB), eleven members of the football division left the congregation and on the same evening founded Fußball-Club Bayern München. Within a few months Bayern achieved high-scoring victories against all local rivals and reached the semifinals of the 1900–01 South German championship. In the following years the club won some local trophies and in 1910–11 Bayern joined the newly founded “Kreisliga”, the first regional Bavarian league. They won this league in its first year, but did not win it again until the beginning of World War I in 1914, which halted all football activities in Germany.

The last few years have been more successful for Schalke finishing second place in 2005, which lead to Schalke making its second appearance in the UEFA Champions League. There, Schalke finished in 3rd place during the group stage, with successful continuation in the UEFA Cup, where Schalke was eliminated by the eventual winner of the cup Sevilla in the semifinal. In 2006 Schalke finished in 4th place in the Bundesliga and a year later they once again finished as runners-up (for the 3rd time in 7 seasons). In 2007–08, Schalke managed to make it past the Champions League group stage for the first time in team history, then advanced to the quarter finals after beating Porto on penalties.

On 9 October 2006 Russian oil company Gazprom would become the club’s new sponsor. The company expects to invest as much as €125 million in the club over a 5½ year period.[3] Gazprom’s sponsorship has been seen by some analysts as a politically motivated attempt to buy friendship in Germany.[4] Within the sponsorship Schalke 04 and FC Zenit Saint Petersburg signed a partnership agreement. Both clubs intend to work closely on improving football-related issues.

On 13 April 2008 the club announced the dismissal of manager Mirko Slomka after a heavy defeat at the hands of Werder Bremen and elimination from the Champions League. Former players Mike Büskens and Youri Mulder were put in charge of the first team on an interim basis.

For the Bundesliga season 2008–09, Schalke signed a new head coach, Fred Rutten, before that being the manager of the Dutch team Twente. He signed a contract running until June 2010.[5] In March 2009 Rutten was sacked and once more Mike Buskens, Youri Mulder and Oliver Reck took over the helm until 1 July 2009, when Felix Magath who led VfL Wolfsburg to the top of the table in the Bundesliga, became Head Coach and General Manager of the Royal Blues.

The 2008–09 season was Hoffenheim’s first season in the German top division. With the performance of strikers Vedad Ibišević, Demba Ba and Chinedu Obasi the newly-promoted Hoffenheim managed to climb to the top of the table quickly, winning the “Herbstmeister” (Autumn-Champion) title with 35 points after 17 matchdays. Ibišević scored a total of 18 goals in 17 matches, being the Bundesliga’s leading goal scorer after the first half of the season. Hoffenheim’s fast and offensive playing style (42 goals in 17 matches) was praised by the German and international press, experts even believed Hoffenheim could win their first championship in their first year playing top flight football.

However, Hoffenheim suffered a devastating blow during the winter break when Ibišević tore an anterior cruciate ligament during a training match against Hamburg. Because of the serious injury Ibišević was unable to play for the second half of the season. Hoffenheim was now deprived of their biggest offensive threat and additionally had to deal with a fair number of other injuries and suspensions. As a result of their heavily debilitated squad Hoffenheim failed to build on their successful first half of the season. After not winning in 12 consecutive matches, Hoffenheim was dislodged from the top and dropped out of the top five down to ninth place. At the end of the season the team however recovered and ended their negative streak with three wins and one draw in the last four games. Hoffenheim eventually finished seventh with 55 points and a goal difference of +14 – still a respectable result for a newly promoted team.

VfL Bochum and Hertha BSC were directly relegated after finishing in the bottom two places. Bochum tied a current record with their sixth relegation from Germany’s highest football league, ending a four-year tenure in the process, while Hertha BSC had to return to the second level after thirteen years. The relegated teams were replaced by 1. FC Kaiserslautern, champions of the 2009–10 2. Bundesliga, and runners-up FC St. Pauli. Kaiserslautern returned to the Bundesliga after four years, and St. Pauli re-entered the top division after eight years. A further place in the league was decided through a two-legged play-off. As in the previous year, 1. FC Nuremberg had to compete, although this time they were the Bundesliga team. FC Augsburg was the 2. Bundesliga’s representative. As in the year before, Nuremberg won both matches on aggregate, 3–0, and defended their Bundesliga spot. This season is the third since reunification without any teams from the former East Germany. The other seasons were 2009-10 and 2005-06. There is also notably no team in Berlin represented.

The 2010–11 Fußball-Bundesliga is the 48th season of the Fußball-Bundesliga, Germany’s premier football league. The season started on the weekend of 21 August 2010 with the traditional season opening match involving the defending champions and will end with the last games on 14 May 2011. The winter break will be in effect between weekends around 18 December 2010 and 15 January 2011. The defending champions are Bayern Munich. The league has also updated its logo for the season.

The Bundesliga (German pronunciation: [ˈbʊndəsˌliːɡa], Federal League) is a professional association football league in Germany. At the top of Germany’s football league system, it is the country’s primary football competition. It is contested by 18 teams and operates on a system of promotion and relegation with the 2. Bundesliga. A total of 50 clubs have competed in the Bundesliga since its founding. Since the 1970s, FC Bayern Munich has dominated the championship, winning the title 21 times. However, the Bundesliga has seen other champions with Hamburger SV, Borussia Dortmund, Werder Bremen, Borussia Mönchengladbach and VfB Stuttgart being the most prominent ones. The Bundesliga is one of the top national leagues, currently ranked 3rd in Europe according to UEFA’s league coefficient ranking, based on recent European performances. It is the number one football league in terms of average attendance and its average of 41,802 fans per game during the 2009-10 season was in fact only beaten by the Indian Premier League and the National Football League (NFL).

Germany was unusual, in that, unlike in most other countries, a unified national league structure was quite late in developing. The Bundesliga was not formed until 1963 and the structure and organisation of the nation’s football leagues have undergone frequent changes right up to the present day. The league was originally founded by the German Football Association, but is now operated by the Deutsche Fußball Liga.

SV Werder Bremen is a German sports club best known for its football team playing in Bremen, in the northwest German federal state of the same name. The club was founded on 4 February 1899 as Fußballverein Werder by a group of sixteen vocational high school students who had won a prize of sports equipment to set them on their way. They took their name from the seldom used regional German word for “river peninsula”, describing the riverside field they first played football on.

Bremen have been a mainstay in the Bundesliga, top flight of German football. Bremen have been crowned champions on four occasions and have won the DFB-Pokal on six occasions. Their most recent achievements in these competitions came in 2004, when they won an historic double. Bremen have also tasted European success, beating AS Monaco in the 1992 European Cup Winners’ Cup Final, 2–0. Bremen also reached the final edition of the UEFA Cup in 2009, before it was rebranded as the UEFA Europa League, where they met Ukrainian side Shakhtar Donetsk. Unfortunately for Bremen, Shakhtar proved too strong, losing the final 2–1 in A.E.T.

Most positive club records are held by Bayern Munich. The major ones are:

* Most titles won: 21
* Most games won in a season: 25
* Fewest games lost in a season: 1
* Most goals scored in a season: 101
* Fewest goals conceded in a season: 21
* Most consecutive victories: 15 (19 March–20 September 2005)

Bayern is not the club with the most seasons in the Bundesliga, though. Hamburg is the only club that has participated in each of the 46 seasons. At the far end Tasmania 1900 Berlin holds an extraordinary list of worst-of records, all achieved in their 1965–66 one-season Bundesliga spell. These records include:

* Most losses in a season: 28
* Fewest games won in a season: 2
* Most goals conceded in a season: 108
* Fewest goals scored in a season: 15

The Hamburger Sport-Verein (HSV), can trace its roots as far back as the 29 September 1887 merger of Der Hohenfelder Sportclub and Wandsbek-Marienthaler Sportclub to form Sportclub Germania zu Hamburg. The current club was formed as Hamburger Sport-Verein in 1919 through the union of three city teams severely weakened by World War I: Sportclub Germania zu Hamburg; Hamburger FC (1888); and FC Falke Eppendorf (1906). The club colors were the Hanseatic red and white in honor of the City of Hamburg, with the blue and black of the oldest of the founding clubs, Germania, being used on the team crest. It is through Germania that HSV can lay a claim to being the oldest team in the country. However, other clubs may dispute that honour, as Germania was formed originally as an athletics club and did not begin to play football until 1891, when a half-dozen Englishmen joined the club, bringing with them their enthusiasm for the game. The newly formed Hamburger SV quickly became competitive and contested the 1922 national final against 1. FC Nuremberg, who were playing for their third consecutive title. The game was called off on account of darkness after three hours and ten minutes of play, drawn at (2:2). The re-match also went into extra time, and in an era that did not allow for substitutions, that game was called at (1:1) when Nuremberg was reduced to just seven players (two were injured, two had been sent off!) and the referee ruled they could not continue. Considerable wrangling ensued over the decision. The German Football Association (Deutscher Fußball Bund) awarded the win to Hamburger SV but urged them to refuse the title in the name of good sportsmanship—which they grudgingly did. Ultimately, the Viktoria trophy was not officially presented that year.

The club was founded on 4 May 1904 as Westfalia Schalke by a group of high school students and first wore the colors red and yellow. The team was unable to gain admittance to the Westdeutscher Spielverband and played as one of the “wild associations” of early German football. In 1912, after a number of years of failed attempts to join the official league, they merged with the gymnastic club Schalker Turnverein 1877 in order to facilitate their entry. This arrangement held up until 1915 when SV Westfalia Schalke was re-established as an independent club. The separation proved short-lived and the two came together again in 1919 as Turn- und Sportverein Schalke 1877. The new club won its first honours in 1923 as champions of the Schalke Kreisliga. It was around this time that Schalke picked up the nickname “Die Knappen” – from an old German word for miner – because the team drew so many of its players and supporters from the coal mine workers of Gelsenkirchen.

In 1924, the football team parted ways with the gymnasts once again – this time taking the club chairman along with them. They took the name FC Schalke 04 and adopted the now familiar blue and white uniforms from which their second nickname would derive – “Die Königsblauen” (English: The Royal Blues). The following year the club became the dominant local side based on a style of play that used short, sharp man-to-man passing to move the ball. This system would later become famous as the “Schalker Kreisel” (English: spinning top). In 1927, it carried them into the top-flight Gauliga Ruhr, onto the league championship, and then into the opening rounds of the national finals.

Hamburger Sport-Verein is a German multi-sport club based in Hamburg, its largest branch being its football department. The football team is one of the country’s oldest, most well known, and best performing clubs, with the unique distinction of having played continuously in top-flight German football since the end of World War I; the team has never been relegated from any top-flight league and is the only team that has always played in the 1. Bundesliga since its foundation in 1963. In the mid-1970s, HSV began a brilliant run that saw them capture numerous honors. In 1976 they won the German Cup and followed up the next year with a Cup Winners’ Cup. They took their first Bundesliga championship in 1979, fell just two points short behind Bayern Munich in 1980, and then won consecutive championships in 1982 and 1983, led by national star Felix Magath. 1983 also brought a European Champions’ Cup with a 1–0 win over Juventus, followed by another German Cup in 1987.

Fußball-Club Gelsenkirchen-Schalke 04, commonly known as simply FC Schalke 04 or Schalke (German pronunciation: [ˈʃalkə]), is a German football club originally from the Schalke district of Gelsenkirchen, North Rhine-Westphalia. Schalke has long been one of the most popular football teams in Germany, even though major successes have been rare since the club’s heyday in the 1930s and early 1940s. The football team is the biggest part of a larger sports club with more than 84,000 members (May 2010) making it the second largest sports club in Germany. Other activities offered by the club include basketball, handball, and track and field. Schalke 04 won its first major European trophy in 1997 by defeating Internazionale on penalty kicks for the UEFA Cup in Milan. Pope John Paul II became an honorary member of the club in 1987 after celebrating a mass in the Parkstadion. Schalke has a rivalry with Borussia Dortmund (see Revierderby) and also has a friendly relationship with Nuremberg. The mascot of the club is called Erwin (also Ährwin.)
