Serbia, then a part of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia became a member of FIBA in 1936. The national team did not show any success in its first couple of years and later suspended play due to World War II. Yugoslavia made its European championship debut in Eurobasket 1947, the fifth edition of the tournament. The team placed 13th out of 14 teams in the competition, losing to the Soviet Union and Hungary in the preliminary round, beating the Netherlands but losing to Italy in the semifinal round (placing third in the three-way tie between the teams), and defeating Albania in the 13th/14th classification match.

Yugoslavia’s appearance at the Eurobasket 1957 tournament in Sofia resulted in a 2-1 record for the preliminary round and advancement to the final round robin. There, they proved capable of two wins, defeating Poland and France to finish at 2-5 for 6th place in the tournament.

Yugoslavia had many successes at the FIBA World Championships. The national team captured 3 titles in 1970, 1978 and 1990, Later capturing 2 more titles as FR Yugoslavia in 1998 and 2002.

The Yugoslav national team of the late 1980s and early 1990s featured what was perhaps the greatest generation in the history of Yugoslav basketball. A common quip about basketball is: “The Canadians invented it, the Yugoslavs perfected it.” With such future NBA players as Dražen Petrović, Vlade Divac, Toni Kukoč, Dino Rađa, Predrag Danilović and Žarko Paspalj, has pioneered the wave of international NBA players well before the early 21st century, when the concept began to gain true global momentum.

Many of the former Yugoslav stars mentioned above were a part of the under-21 national team that won the FIBA World Junior Championships in 1987, defeating the USA both in pool play and in the final.

The Turkish national basketball team is the basketball side that represents Turkey in international competitions. The team is nicknamed “12 Dev Adam” (literally: “12 Giant Men”).

The Serbian national basketball team (Serbian: Кошаркашка репрезентација Србије / Košarkaška reprezentacija Srbije) represents Serbia in international basketball matches.

FIBA considers Serbian national basketball team the direct successor of Serbia and Montenegro[4] and therefore of FR Yugoslavia. Previously (1946-1991) Serbia was part of Yugoslavian national basketball team. Serbia is not considered the direct successor of SFR Yugoslavia, but as an indirect successor.

On December 12, 2009, Lithuania was granted a wild card to participate in World Championship in Turkey the following year. Lithuania started the tournament against New Zealand. After a tough first quarter, Lithuanians took control of the game and kept ahead by a comfortable lead till the final buzzer, which signaled Lithuania’s victory 92:79. The second game was against Canada. After reducing the 17 point deficit in the fourth quarter, Lithuanians finally gained a small lead towards the end of the game. Canada had a chance to win the game, but Jermaine Anderson’s game winning three rimmed out at the last second and Lithuania celebrated their second victory 70:68. The next match was against the defending champion Spain, and after another comeback from an 18 point deficit, the Lithuanians won the upsetting game 76:73, Linas Kleiza’s free-throws sealing the victory.

Victory against Spain ensured Lithuania’s qualification to the eighth finals. Lithuania’s next match was against France, which held a perfect 3-0 record. France quickly gained momentum in the first half and forced Lithuania to a double-digit deficit. However, in the second half, Lithuania deftly reduced the deficit and cruised past the French defense, outscoring them 45-25 in the second half to win the game 69:55. The French were forced into second place as Lithuanians took Group D’s leadership spot. Lithuania won the last game against Lebanon without much difficulty 84:66 and finished with a perfect 5-0 record in the preliminary round.

The United States men’s national basketball team represents the United States of America in international men’s basketball. The USA is the most successful team in international competition, winning medals in all sixteen Olympic tournaments it has entered, coming away with thirteen golds. Two of its gold medal-winning squads were inducted to the Basketball Hall of Fame as teams in August 2010—the 1960 team, which featured six Hall of Famers (four players and two coaches), and the 1992 “Dream Team”, featuring 13 Hall of Famers (10 players, three coaches). The United States is currently second in the FIBA World Rankings.

Traditionally composed of amateur players, a 1989 rule change by FIBA allowed USA Basketball to field teams with professional players. The first such team, known as the “Dream Team”, won the gold medal at the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona, Spain, playing in the final against Croatia.

With the introduction of professionals, the team was able to spark a second run of dominance after capturing only a bronze medal in 1988. A team of professional players competed in the 1994 Basketball World Championships, finishing first. In 1996, 2000, and 2008, the USA again captured gold medals.

However, American dominance has lessened in recent years. Facing increased competition, the USA failed to win a medal at the 2002 World Championship, finishing sixth. The 2004 Summer Olympic team lost three games on its way to a bronze medal, a record that represented more losses in a single year than the country’s Olympic teams had suffered in all previous Olympiads combined.

Determined to put an end to these failures, USA Basketball initiated a long-term project aimed at creating better, more cohesive teams. The USA won its first seven games at the 2006 World Championships in Japan before losing against Greece in the semi-finals, ending the competition with the bronze medal. The USA won gold two years later, though, at the 2008 Summer Olympics with a dominant performance.

The World Championship has used various forms of qualification throughout its history. The first five tournaments were held in South America and participation was dominated by teams from the Americas. At the first tournament, FIBA intended for the three Olympic medalists to compete, plus the host Argentina and two teams each from Europe, Asia, and South America. However, no Asian team was willing to travel to the event, so six of the ten teams were from the Americas. European powerhouse Soviet Union later made their first appearance in 1959 after missing the first two events.

The team came into existence after the dissolution of the Soviet Union and its powerful basketball team. The team has won 2 silver medals in the FIBA World Championships. Their most recent success was winning gold at EuroBasket 2007 in Spain.

The Argentine national basketball team is the basketball side that represents Argentina in basketball international competitions, and depends on the Argentine Basketball Federation.

Argentina is the first team to win the world title, in 1950. The team also won the Olympic Tournament in 2004 and the FIBA Diamond Ball in 2008. Argentina also won the 1934, 1935, 1941, 1942, 1943, 1966, 1976, 1979, 1987, 2001, 2004 and 2008 South American Championships, and the 2001 Americas Championship (where United States and Puerto Rico also participate), as well as many youth championships.

Argentina is the only national team in America along with United States which has won the five most important titles organized by FIBA: World Cup, Gold medal in Basketball in the Olympic Games, Basketball Confederations Cup (FIBA Diamond Ball), Continental Championship (FIBA Americas) and the Gold medal in basketball in the Panamerican Championship.

Due to the series of good results since the beginning of the 2000, Argentina reached the first position in the FIBA men’s ranking at the end of the 2008 Olympic Games.

The Spanish national basketball team is the basketball team representing Spain in international competitions, organized and run by the Spanish Basketball Federation. As of September 2010, they are the reigning World and European champions and third in the FIBA World Rankings for men.

Slovenia ended on the 6th place in the Eurobasket 2005 and thus qualified for Basketball World Championship 2006. Since the independence of the country in 1991, the team competed at every European Basketball Championship but failed to advance to the next group until 2005.

The first game in the history of the selection was a friendly game before the 1935 Eurobasket, where Spain faced the selection of Portugal. This event, which was held in Geneva in the summer of 1935 was the first EuroBasket in history. Spain finished 2nd and qualified for the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin where basketball was introduced for the first time. After this, the team disappeared from the EuroBasket competition for over 20 years and reappeared at the EuroBasket 1959 in Turkey, where it finished 15th. In the following years, the selection slowly but surely worked its way up into the medal ranks again and appeared on the podium six more times between 1959 and 2007. Then Spain came to host the 2007 Eurobasket which was held in Madrid, Palma de Mallorca, Alicante, Seville and Granada. At this competition the same 12 players that won the 2006 FIBA World Championship in Japan made it through to the final. This increased expectations for the Spanish national team to become the first national team to win the first Eurobasket right after having won the previous FIBA World Championship. However, Spain lost the final against Russia with a tight score of 59-60 through a basket by a Russian player in the last seconds and an error of the Spaniard Pau Gasol, at the last shoot. Spain thus took the silver medal.

Then, at the next Eurobasket 2009 Spain went to win the gold medal in this competition for the first time in its history. Altogether, Spain has won nine Eurobasket medals: one gold, six silver and two bronze.

In the early years of the FIBA World Championship, Spain struggled to establish a steady presence as a competitor. Between 1950 and 1970, the team only qualified once. Then, beginning in 1974 Spain developed into a serious competitor and regularly finished among the tournaments top performers for years to come. At the 2006 FIBA World Championship, the Spanish team finally achieved the ultimate victory, the greatest success in its history. The date was September 3, 2006, as Spain won the gold medal game against the Greek national team. Held in the Saitama Super Arena in Japan, the game ended with a final score of 70-47.

Pau Gasol was named the tournament MVP, and Jorge Garbajosa also made the All-Tournament team.

Shortly afterwards, the team were awarded with the 2006 Prince of Asturias Award in Sports.

The Slovenian National Basketball Team is a team that is selected by the Basketball Federation of Slovenia to compete in major international basketball events in representation of Slovenia.

The top four finishers in each of the four preliminary round groups advanced to the sixteen team, single-elimination knockout stage, where Group A teams would meet Group B teams and Group C would meet Group D. European teams proved the most successful in the first round, as nine of the ten teams advanced to the knockout stage (only Germany did not progress). Both Oceanian teams qualified for the next round, as did three of the five FIBA Americas teams. The three African and four Asian teams struggled, with only Angola and China reaching the knockout stage after each finished fourth place in their group.

There were few surprises in the early round; each team that advanced to the knockout stage was ranked in the top 20 of the FIBA World Ranking at the time of the tournament. Defending champions Spain struggled early, losing two of their first three games before recovering to finish second in Group D. Argentina and the United States, the two top teams in the FIBA rankings, both cruised to the knockout phase, as the United States went 5–0 and Argentina went 4–1, with their only loss coming to Number 5 ranked Serbia.
