The World Championship has used various forms of qualification throughout its history. The first five tournaments were held in South America and participation was dominated by teams from the Americas. At the first tournament, FIBA intended for the three Olympic medalists to compete, plus the host Argentina and two teams each from Europe, Asia, and South America. However, no Asian team was willing to travel to the event, so six of the ten teams were from the Americas. European powerhouse Soviet Union later made their first appearance in 1959 after missing the first two events.

The Russian national basketball team represents Russia in international basketball matches.

The team came into existence after the dissolution of the Soviet Union and its powerful basketball team. The team has won 2 silver medals in the FIBA World Championships. Their most recent success was winning gold at EuroBasket 2007 in Spain.

The Argentine national basketball team is the basketball side that represents Argentina in basketball international competitions, and depends on the Argentine Basketball Federation.

Argentina is the first team to win the world title, in 1950. The team also won the Olympic Tournament in 2004 and the FIBA Diamond Ball in 2008. Argentina also won the 1934, 1935, 1941, 1942, 1943, 1966, 1976, 1979, 1987, 2001, 2004 and 2008 South American Championships, and the 2001 Americas Championship (where United States and Puerto Rico also participate), as well as many youth championships.

Argentina is the only national team in America along with United States which has won the five most important titles organized by FIBA: World Cup, Gold medal in Basketball in the Olympic Games, Basketball Confederations Cup (FIBA Diamond Ball), Continental Championship (FIBA Americas) and the Gold medal in basketball in the Panamerican Championship.

Due to the series of good results since the beginning of the 2000, Argentina reached the first position in the FIBA men’s ranking at the end of the 2008 Olympic Games.

The Spanish national basketball team is the basketball team representing Spain in international competitions, organized and run by the Spanish Basketball Federation. As of September 2010, they are the reigning World and European champions and third in the FIBA World Rankings for men.

Slovenia ended on the 6th place in the Eurobasket 2005 and thus qualified for Basketball World Championship 2006. Since the independence of the country in 1991, the team competed at every European Basketball Championship but failed to advance to the next group until 2005.

The first game in the history of the selection was a friendly game before the 1935 Eurobasket, where Spain faced the selection of Portugal. This event, which was held in Geneva in the summer of 1935 was the first EuroBasket in history. Spain finished 2nd and qualified for the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin where basketball was introduced for the first time. After this, the team disappeared from the EuroBasket competition for over 20 years and reappeared at the EuroBasket 1959 in Turkey, where it finished 15th. In the following years, the selection slowly but surely worked its way up into the medal ranks again and appeared on the podium six more times between 1959 and 2007. Then Spain came to host the 2007 Eurobasket which was held in Madrid, Palma de Mallorca, Alicante, Seville and Granada. At this competition the same 12 players that won the 2006 FIBA World Championship in Japan made it through to the final. This increased expectations for the Spanish national team to become the first national team to win the first Eurobasket right after having won the previous FIBA World Championship. However, Spain lost the final against Russia with a tight score of 59-60 through a basket by a Russian player in the last seconds and an error of the Spaniard Pau Gasol, at the last shoot. Spain thus took the silver medal.

Then, at the next Eurobasket 2009 Spain went to win the gold medal in this competition for the first time in its history. Altogether, Spain has won nine Eurobasket medals: one gold, six silver and two bronze.

In the early years of the FIBA World Championship, Spain struggled to establish a steady presence as a competitor. Between 1950 and 1970, the team only qualified once. Then, beginning in 1974 Spain developed into a serious competitor and regularly finished among the tournaments top performers for years to come. At the 2006 FIBA World Championship, the Spanish team finally achieved the ultimate victory, the greatest success in its history. The date was September 3, 2006, as Spain won the gold medal game against the Greek national team. Held in the Saitama Super Arena in Japan, the game ended with a final score of 70-47.

Pau Gasol was named the tournament MVP, and Jorge Garbajosa also made the All-Tournament team.

Shortly afterwards, the team were awarded with the 2006 Prince of Asturias Award in Sports.

The Slovenian National Basketball Team is a team that is selected by the Basketball Federation of Slovenia to compete in major international basketball events in representation of Slovenia.

The top four finishers in each of the four preliminary round groups advanced to the sixteen team, single-elimination knockout stage, where Group A teams would meet Group B teams and Group C would meet Group D. European teams proved the most successful in the first round, as nine of the ten teams advanced to the knockout stage (only Germany did not progress). Both Oceanian teams qualified for the next round, as did three of the five FIBA Americas teams. The three African and four Asian teams struggled, with only Angola and China reaching the knockout stage after each finished fourth place in their group.

There were few surprises in the early round; each team that advanced to the knockout stage was ranked in the top 20 of the FIBA World Ranking at the time of the tournament. Defending champions Spain struggled early, losing two of their first three games before recovering to finish second in Group D. Argentina and the United States, the two top teams in the FIBA rankings, both cruised to the knockout phase, as the United States went 5–0 and Argentina went 4–1, with their only loss coming to Number 5 ranked Serbia.

During the late 1990s, international basketball began to gather attention as more and more foreign players became stars in the NBA. Therefore, the 2000 U.S. team had the enormous task of proving that American basketball could remain the best in the world. The new team that was assembled again featured NBA players, but this time few of them were considered to be true superstars, as several elite players elected not to participate.

The U.S. team participated in the 2000 Olympics in Sydney, Australia and was coached by Rudy Tomjanovich. It won its first two games by lopsided margins, but faced more difficult competition thereafter. A preliminary game against Lithuania, the U.S. team won 85–76, marking the first time a team of professional American players failed to win by double digits. Two games later, in a 106–94 victory over France, Vince Carter pulled off one of the most famous dunks in basketball history, jumping over 7’2″/2.18 m French center Frédéric Weis on his way to the basket. (The French media would dub Carter’s feat le dunk de la mort—”the dunk of death”.)

A major shock came on the semifinals game when the United States managed to defeat Lithuania by only two points, 85–83, after Lithuanian star (and future NBA player, first with the Indiana Pacers and later with the Golden State Warriors) Šarūnas Jasikevičius missed a desperation three-pointer at the buzzer that would have won the game.

The closeness of the semifinal game was so shocking that NBC took the unusual step of showing the gold medal game live rather than on tape delay. (The game started around 2 p.m. Sydney time on Sunday October 1st, which is late Saturday evening in the USA. NBC originally planned to show the game almost 24 hours later during its Sunday prime time broadcast.) The USA won the gold medal against France in a very close game, 85–75. Though the US went undefeated on its way to the gold medal, the team began to lose its aura of invincibility for the first time.

The United States fielded another team composed of professional players in the 1994 World Championship, held in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. This was an entirely new roster, as USA Basketball elected to showcase stars who were not present at the 1992 Olympics. Composed primarily of younger NBA players, the team lacked the widespread appeal of its predecessor but nevertheless continued its dominance. Coached by Don Nelson of the Golden State Warriors, this team easily captured the gold medal in tournament play

Greece and Serbia both began the tournament shorthanded when each had two players suspended for their roles in a brawl at the World Championship tuneup Acropolis Tournament, held in mid-August. The two teams engaged in a chaotic brawl with 2:40 left when Greece’s Antonis Fotsis threatened Serbia’s Miloš Teodosić after Teodosić committed a foul. The game was eventually canceled after the fight spilled off the floor and into the locker room tunnel. Serbian center Nenad Krstić was arrested and held overnight for throwing a chair in the brawl.

For their roles in the melee, Krstić was suspended for the first three games of the tournament, while Teodosić, Fotsis, and Greece’s Sofoklis Schortsanitis were suspended for the first two games. Both Greek coach Jonas Kazlauskas and Serbian coach Dušan Ivković criticized FIBA for waiting until less than 48 hours before the tournament – over a week after the brawl – to announce the suspensions, citing the unfairness of playing shorthanded for the first games. Greece eventually won their first two games in spite of the suspensions, while Serbia won two of their first three games.

Angola and the United States were the only teams made up of entirely domestic players (Jordan and Russia each had 11 domestic players). Slovenia was the only team comprised entirely of individuals playing outside the domestic league. The Canada squad also consisted entirely of individuals playing outside the country, but Canada has no professional league that operates exclusively in the country. The National Basketball Association, based in the U.S., has a Canadian team, and several minor leagues operate on both sides of the U.S.–Canada border. Both of the NBA players on the Canada squad were under contract to U.S.-based teams. Forty-one NBA players were selected to compete in the tournament, the most of any league.
