The 2010 FIBA World Championship is hosted by Turkey. The tournament runs from August 28 to September 12, 2010. It is co-organized by the International Basketball Federation (FIBA), Turkish Basketball Federation and the 2010 Organizing Committee. It is considered as prestigious a competition as the Olympic Basketball Tournament. For the third time (after the 1986 and 2006 tournaments), the World Championship will have 24 competing nations. As a result, the group stage games will be played in four different cities, and the knockout round will be hosted by Istanbul. The draw for the Championship took place on December 15, 2009 in Istanbul. Teams were drawn into four preliminary round groups of six teams each. Teams will then play a round robin schedule, with the top sixteen teams advancing to the knockout stage.

The Puerto Rico men’s national basketball team represents Puerto Rico in international basketball competitions such as the Olympics Games, the World Championship, the Americas Championship, and others. The team, selected by the Puerto Rican Basketball Federation, historically comprised only players from the National Superior Basketball league, but in the 1990s began to include Puerto Rican players playing abroad professionally. In the same fashion, there are teams that also represent Puerto Rico in women’s and junior’s competitions.

The Chinese national basketball team is the basketball team representing the People’s Republic of China in international competitions. The team is generally recognized as the strongest team in Asia, and has won more FIBA Asia Championships than any other nation. The governing body of Chinese basketball operations is the Chinese Basketball Association. Based on the number of tournament titles, China has the most successful basketball program in Asia.
